Scattering Cross-sections in Quantum Electrodynamics.

Abstract
Our understanding of the fundamental interactions -electrowea
k and strong forces is described by a
theory which is now known as the Standard Model of particle physics
. In this thesis, I study the
electroweak sector of the Standard Model. Using the Feynman rule
s of quantum electrodynamics, I
derive cross-sections for
e
−
e
+
−→
μ
−
μ
+
and for Compton Scattering i.e,
γ
+
e
−
−→
γ
+
e
−
. First I
obtain the cross-section for the scattering with unpolarized lepto
ns and then to get a more detailed
understanding of the process I re-study the scattering with pola
rized leptons. I give the details of
the calculations and present some of the results involving gamma mat
rices and spinor sums in the
appendix.
