Aspects of Self-Propulsion.
Masters thesis, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad.
Abstract
We present a formulation by which the
uctuating thermodynamics for the case of self propelled
particles can be calculated. We identify the rst law of thermodynamics from the context
of energy conservation. Using the Detailed Fluctuation Theorem, we arrive at a denition of
entropy. We apply this formalism to the Rayleigh Helmholtz and Energy Depot models of self
propulsion. The formalism is extended to higher, namely two dimensions. In the last section,
the possibility of phase coexistence in the many body problem of interacting self propelled
particles and passive particles in an external harmonic trap is examined.
