Abstract

A large amount of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) materials are created every year during the rehabilitation and reconstruction of existing flexible pavements. This RAP material treated with cementitious materials like cement and lime can be used as base material for pavements. The use of RAP material instead of natural aggregates as the base layer will impart sustainability to the pavement construction and further sustainability can be enhanced by reinforcing it with geogrids thereby improving the strain and deformation properties of the pavement layers. In this study, the reduction in thickness of the pavement is evaluated when natural aggregate is replaced by fly ash treated RAP as the pavement base material. Also the effect of geogrid reinforcement in the flexible pavements is analyzed using a two-dimensional explicit finite difference program FLAC (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua). The results indicate that the geogrid placed at the interface of subgrade and base layer further reduces the rutting strains and improves the structural support to the pavement system.
