Abstract
Due to population growth, industrialization, urbanization and economic growth, a trend of significant increase in municipal solid waste (MSW) generation has been recorded worldwide. The shear
strength properties of MSW slopes are highly variable due to waste decomposition with time or with introduction of new material on top of the slope.
Therefore careful slope stability analysis must be
performed in order to model parameter uncertainty
and how this may affect overall stability. This paper
pertains to a study on the reliability evaluation of
MSW slopes under a probabilistic framework. The
results of the analysis are compared and discussed in
the light of conventional factor of safety approach.
The slope stability analysis is conducted on the various landfill models using the computer software
SLOPE/W.
