Abstract
For any earthwork construction, the foremost criteria required to be satisfied is that it should be stiff or the soil should be properly compacted. The water content and relative compaction have been used since long as a QC parameter. Light Weight Deflectometer is a device which measures the deformation modulus of soil which reflects its stiffness. It is a portable device and produces quick results. By expressing the deformation modulus from Light Weight Deflectometer as a function of water content, and relative compaction, and suction, the LWD can be used as quality control (QC) device. In this study, correlations have been developed for deformation modulus with the water content, relative compaction and suction. Using this correlations, a range of deformation modulus can be obtained which can be used to meet the QC requirements. Two different soils have been used. LWD and suctions tests are conducted on both these soils keeping one parameter as constant and varying the other one and subsequently correlations are obtained. Large scale testing is performed on a tank of dimensions equal to 0.9 m *0.9 m* 1 m of length, width and height respectively. For a particular test, water content and dry density are known. Using these known parameters soil is filled in the tank up to eight layers of lift height equal to 10 cm each. The LWD tests are performed at compacted top layer at five different points. After this, the samples are collected from the tank for measuring suction using filter paper method.
