Abstract

The main objective of this research was to study the feasibility of using algal and algal-bacterial systems in treating laundry wastewater. Three different types of systems - green algae (System A), diatom + bacteria (System B) and green algae + bacteria (System C), were set up to evaluate their performance (removal of C, N and Anionic surfactant) in treating three different wastewaters - 1) Synthetic Wastewater, 2) Real laundry wastewater and 3) Real laundry wastewater with added trace elements. Best reactor performance was observed in case 3, where additional trace elements were added to the real laundry wastewater. Steady-state kinetic parameters (k, Ks, Y, kd, µm) of the three systems were evaluated for case 3, by fitting experimental data to linearized Michaelis - Menten and Monod’s models. The higher SRTs showed better TOC, TN and Anionic Surfactant removal than lower SRTs. System B (diatom + bacteria) showed the best performance in the removal of both macro (79.2 % TOC, 90.19% TN) and micropollutants. The plate count in system B at 16 days SRT was 2000 CFU/mL, 50 times more than the plate count of system C. The results suggest that diatoms have a better symbiotic relationship with bacteria when compared to green algae. Green algae though tolerant to the high concentration of LAS (100mg/L) showed lesser removal efficiency when compared to system B (diatom + bacteria).
