Future of Documents: Consumption Experience on Smartphones.
Masters thesis, Indian institute of technology Hyderabad.
Abstract
Technology and its rapid development has had a revolutionary effect on the
reading habits of millennials. In these changing times of reduced attention spans
and need for fidget spinners, it becomes important to not burden the users with
information overload.
The present thesis explores and discusses consuming documents & its
constituent contents on small screens, namely on smart devices, and aims at
identifying and designing a model capturing factors that most influence the
perceived experience of document consumption.
The thesis starts with an overview of what documents are, their evolution
into content chunks, a brief research about the existant technologies and
applications that allow unconventionality in document consumption and
authoring. I also try to identify through existing literature, issues that may
affect fluency and ease of reading on mobile devices. The thesis then
presents explorations and experiments on consumption performance and
perceived experience when on mobile screens. The focus is primarily on
how document can be semantic content chunks, further exploring the various
navigation models and essentially making consumption of documents smooth
and engaging
