Abstract
This paper describes the productivity growth and efficiency change among the two-digit disaggregated industry level of the manufacturing sector in Odisha during 1980-81 to 2002-2003. The results from the data envelopment analysis (DEA) indicate that the mean total factor productivity (TFP) growth of the aggregate manufacturing sector is mainly driven by the technical change, not by technical efficiency change (TEC). Further, the results also reveal that the TFP growth has decelerated in the post-reform periods as compared to the pre-reforms periods. At the disaggregated level, the results find that labour-intensive industries are regressing in technical progress (TP) whereas capital-intensive industries lack in efficiency change. Thus, for a policy choice the manufacturing sector of Odisha needs both technical change and efficiency upgradation to boost productivity growth and hence the state economy's growth the in the future.
