Abstract
Manganese oxide (MnO2) is a low cost and less toxic alternate to ruthenium oxide in supercapacitor applications. The synergistic behaviour between MnO2 and graphite yielded a high capacitance material. MnO2 crystals with caddice-clew-like morphology are prepared by the hydrothermal method. MnO2, Graphite, MnO2@Graphite and chemically robust conducting polymer poly (N-methyl pyrrole) (PMP) structures and electrochemical performances are measured by optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Electrochemical properties of MnO2, Graphite, MnO2@Graphite and conducting polymer poly (N-methyl pyrrole) as supercapacitor electrodes were studied in 1 M LiClO4/ PC electrolyte. The maximum specific capacitance of MnO2, Graphite, MnO2@Graphite composite and conducting polymer PMP are 153, 18.5, 172 and 682.5 F/g reached at 1 A/g. MnO2/SS, Graphite/SS, composite MnO2@Graphite/SS and conducting polymer PMP/SS cells reveal remarkably high energy densities of 76.5, 6.0, 86.0, 54.6 Wh/kg at a current density 1 A/g and power densities of 1800, 1440, 1800, and 720 W/kg at 1 A/g respectively.
