Abstract

Bridges are the most important component of any transportation network. Skewed Bridges are constructed when the bridge support needs to be al igned non orthogonal to the direction of movement of vehicles. Skewed bridges will develop complex behavior under ground motions due to this non - orthogonal orientation. In this study, the seismic performance of the skewed bridges under different ground mot ions is compared. The performance of similar straight bridge is used for comparison. Bridge models are developed in SAP 2000 Computer Software. A comparative study is carried out by varying the stiffness of bearings, and the effect of this change in stiff ness on the response of skewed and straight bridges are explored. Four sets of ground motion data are selected for this study; two for far field, one for intermediate field and one for far field ground motion. The peak values of displacement and accelerati on of deck at pier locations, Base shear force for skewed and straight bridges, Bending moment and Torsional moment developed in piers under different ground motions are reported. Linear modal tim e history and Nonlinear Direct Time Integration Methods are adopted in SAP2000 software and the results are tabulated. Failure of bearings are also investigated for Linear modal time history analysis .
