Abstract

Domestic violence (henceforth, DV) is one of the most serious problems that women in India face. DV has severe consequences on the mental health of its victims. Recent studies show that the number of cases of DV reported in Kerala is more than ever before. Reasonably good primary education, high level of literacy, and lack of poverty are some of the advantages which women in Kerala generally enjoy. Considering such development indicators, one would expect lesser gender injustice. However, contrary to one’s expectation, DV against women is high in Kerala. Research indicates that Kerala also has the highest rates of suicide in India, including suicides related to DV. It also has a high rate of gender-based violence such as sexual abuse, mutilation, and rape.
