Abstract
The major concern to save the environment from harmful emission in to the atmosphere emphasizes the importance of greener modes of transport systems and bought newer and effective developments in the area of high power traction, ship propulsion systems and more electric aircrafts. Conventional electric drives based on three - phase machines are no more a best solution for these safety critical applications where improved efficiency, higher reliability , lower acousti cal noise and vibration s are of highest importance. Moreover, with the advancement in the area of power electronics and drives , electric al machines typically derive their excitation from power converters and not directly from the utility supply. With this advantage number of phas es need not be limited to three.
