Abstract
This paper presents a new fault distance identification method using fault current DC transients on a two terminal transmission line. The magnitude of the fault current transients from either end of the transmission line are considered for fault distance calculation. The relationship between the fault current DC transients and the fault distance is analysed and derived considering pi network representation of the transmission line. The behaviour of the new fault distance identification method is tested for numerous fault locations and various types of faults. As the fault current transients are dependent on the fault inception angles, the efficiency of the presented method is also examined by varying FIAs. The fault locations on the two terminal transmission line are identified within 1% error for many of faults. A 10 bus 4 machine system is considered for analysing the proposed method through simulation using PSCAD® and the MATLAB® is used for implementing fault location algorithm. © 2021 IEEE.
