Abstract

The discovery of Piezoelectr icity in Quartz in late 1880 by Curie brothers and its technological importance in various fields led to an intense research in this field up to the First World War. Post First World War another class of piezoelectric with perovskite structures w as discove red and popularly known was BaTiO 3 . Later the most commercially used materials that ruled the field of piezoelectric based devices and applications was P b Z r 0.52 T i 0.48 O 3 (PZT) . I t was commercially successful due to its superior p iezo - coefficient and its hig h Curie temperature. Its importance and vast presence in today’s modern world can be estimat ed by this fact that all major f erroelectric and piezoelectric devices are made up of PZT based compounds. But the growing awareness about human health and environm ent led world familiar to the hazard that is present by using Lead. So, the nee d for an alternative l ead free p iezoelectrics arose. In 2009 Liu and Ren reported a Lead free p iezoelectric material with morphotrophic composition that have p iezo - coefficient v alue higher than PZT .
