Abstract

We carry out simulations to investigate the backflow analysis of plume expansion into rarefied atmosphere for a supersonic rocket model. The open source software OpenFOAM (Open Field Operation and Manipulation) is used with the compressible computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver rhoCentralFoam. The flow fields are computed by the steady Reynolds-Averaged NavierStokes (RANS) solver with k- w SST two equation turbulence model. Due to the existence of rarefaction conditions in outer-atmosphere, we have implemented the first-order Maxwell slip boundary condition for the velocity and Smoluchowski jump for the temperature. rhoCentralFoam solver has been validated with the experimental data for a nozzle flow in the slip flow regime.
