Abstract

Density functional theory (DFT) has been widely used in condensed matter physics to explore different material properties and is the most successful theory in electronic structure calculations. In the present thesis, DFT has been used to compute the Fermi surface (FS) topology under compression in lanthanum and yttrium based binary and ternary Cu3Au-type superconducting compounds and some lanthanum based filled skutterudites. In addition, we try to correlate the variation of the density of states at the Fermi level, N(EF ), elastic softening, variation of superconducting transition temperature, Tc, under compression with the FS topology change.
