Abstract

Utilization of waste materials for fills can alleviate problems associated with their disposal and can substitute conventional fill materials. In this study, a composite material made of two waste materials-fly ash and shredded scrap tires- as a fill material was explored. Shredded waste tires of nominal size equal to 9.5 mm (tire chips), and fly ash from two sources were used in the study. The resilient modulus values were determined by conducting cyclic triaxial tests on various mixtures of fine fly ash and tire chips (10% and 30% by dry weight of fly ash). The resilient modulus tests were conducted at optimum moisture content (OMC), +2% OMC (wet side of optimum) and -2% OMC (dry side of optimum) and at different hours of curing periods (equal to 6 and 24 hours). The resilient modulus for fly ash at OMC at 24 hours of curing was found to be equal to 75-100MPa. The shear strength properties of mixtures of tire chips and fly ash were determined by conducting direct shear tests on samples prepared at three different mixing ratios of fly ash and tire chips (10%, 30% and 60% by dry weight of fly ash). The shear strength envelopes of fly ash and of mixtures of fly ash and tire chips were provided at both peak and critical states. The shear strength of the mixture was found to be higher than that of fly ash alone. Tire chip content equal to about 30% (by weight of fly ash) was found to be the optimum mixing ratio to achieve the maximum shear strength of the composite material.
