Abstract

Flow in industrial cyclones is always turbulent, selection of suitable turbulence model is very important. This paper is aimed to find the appropriate turbulence model for the hydrodynamic predictions in industrial cyclones. Two-phase and multiphase simulations are conducted in various industrial size cyclones using Volume of Fluid (VOF) and modified mixture multiphase models, coupled with Reynolds Stress (RSM), Detached Eddy Simulation (DES), and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) turbulence models. Assessment of turbulence model in combination with two-phase model is made in terms of air core, flow split, mean and turbulent flow field. Simulated mean and turbulent flow field in a 75mm hydrocyclone is validated against Hsieh (1988) Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) experiments. Numerically predicted air core in 75mm Tega hydrocyclone is cross-validated with high-speed Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT), High-Speed Video camera (HSV) measurements. Multiphase flow predictions in 75mm, 250mm and 350mm cyclones are compared against experimental classification curves. Turbulent intensity profiles are compared in all the cyclones to exhibit the turbulence levels. Even though LES is computationally expensive, close predictions are associated with the LES turbulence model in all the cyclones. RSM turbulence model predictions are reasonably good in bigger cyclones where the turbulence levels are low. But in smaller size cyclones LES predictions are superior compared to remaining turbulence models. DES turbulence model is completely under predicted the flow field in 75mm hydrocyclone.
