Abstract
Present work reports the oxidation kinetics of Ti 3 GeC 2 MAX phase. Two different methods were used: thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. To study the oxidation kinetics, pre-sintered samples were heated up to 1473 K in air at different heating rates. The samples were nearly stable up to about 735 K. It exhibits a non-linear oxidation behavior, i.e. different weight gains at different temperature regions. The data were analyzed separately using conventional kinetic models. Oxidation of Ti 3 GeC 2 compound was characterized with different activation energies for different temperature ranges. Process was found to initiate with the formation of TiO 2 followed by CO and GeO 2 .
