Abstract

This paper presents an approach for finding the optimal location of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) considering critical buses. Critical buses are merit ordered based on their criticality by using transient stability analysis and fuzzy logic. Integer Linear Programming (ILP) is used to find the optimal locations for placement of PMUs ensuring system observability while considering different cases such as PMUs placed at selected critical buses and twice observability of critical buses. The proposed approach is implemented on IEEE 24bus system, New England 39-bus system, IEEE 57-bus system and IEEE 118-bus system and numerical results are shown for illustration purpose.
