Abstract

Blockchain is a peer to peer distributed ledger of transactions, stored and saved in a chain of connected blocks. Many industries have become interested in adopting blockchain in their business and information technology systems. However, performance and scalability is still a cited concern of current blockchain systems. In the past few years, several blockchain platforms have been developed. Reports on the performance of different blockchain implementations exists. Howewer, there is still no clear and commonly accepted methodology for evaluating and assessing the different blockchain platforms in terms of their various aspects, such as performance, security, and scalability. Based on this metrics, a distributed ledger analysis and benchmarking framework is designed and set up in a test environment which can produce reproducible results. Hyperledger Fabric by Linux Foundation is selected as a blockchain platform for performance measurements and evaluation. The blockchain platform is then benchmarked using the DLT benchmarking tool Caliper. The evaluation of the measurement results gives insights into the performance impact of four factors, namely variations of transaction rate, workload, block size, and also the resource utilization of the system.
