Abstract

It is very significant to resolve the exact mechanism of generation and propagation of the waves in seismology. Post signing of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, it has become important to differentiate the recorded signal from a nuclear explosion to that from an earthquake. This work aims to study the characteristics of different source mechanisms and the propagation of seismic waves resulting from these events through numerical models. Specifically, the spectral element method is used to study wave propagation in the elastic media. In this study, we simulate equipotent explosion and earthquakes to differentiate their response spectra. Also, to do a parametric study, we simulate the blast at different depths and analyze their response spectra. A model including topography and vertical velocity profile like that of National Nevada Security Site where the Source Physics Experiment (SPE) was conducted, is also simulated.
