Abstract
Hollow micro-needles utilizing FDA approved, biocompatible, biodegradable, robust silk as the construction material satisfies all the key criteria required for efficient transdermal drug delivery or bio – fluid extraction applications. In this work, we have proposed the fabrication of solid silk micro-needles as well as hollow silk micro-needles using a novel, simple and cost effective fabrication method without using any complex fabrication techniques. The current fabrication of silk micro-needles is achieved through soft lithography approach where in first creating a master mold on silicon substrate along with SU8 micro pillars and replicating the inverted device onto the flexible silk fibroin film. In this thesis, we have described the challenges encountered during the fabrication of hollow silk micro-needles in a step by step manner. Finally we have discussed the future scope of the present work utilizing the above silk microneedles for transdermal drug delivery system / bio-fluid extraction applications.
