Abstract
Induction motors are the main workhorse of industrial applications because of their low cost, less maintenance, ruggedness and reliability. Although induction machines are reliable, they are subjected to many undesirable faults such as winding faults, broken rotor bars, bearing faults and unbalanced stator and rotor. Several studies have shown that 30%–40% of induction motor failures are due to stator winding breakdown. The stator windings of the induction machine can be connected in star or delta. If one of the phase gets opened, then the machine may not run with two phases. -connected machines are the most common connection type for low horse power machines. When one of the phase of star connected induction machine gets opened due to winding breakdown, then that terminal voltage will be applied to the neutral of the star connected stator. Then the machine will run with two phases with reduced power rating. The objective is to connect the remaining leg of the inverter to the star neutral of the stator windings. Then, the induction motor will run with reduced performance. To get the better performance, induction motor during fault condition is given with different excitation. Simulations are done using Plexim software and the results are verified with laboratory prototype.
