Abstract

The purpose of the present research is to find out the critical ricochet angle of spherical projectile impacting a thin metal target. A target is called thin if stress and deformation gradients throughout its thickness may be neglected and ricochet is the phenomena where the projectile, on impact with the target, instead of penetrating rebounds off the target. Critical ricochet angle is defined as the angle of impact of the projectile above which ricochet will occur. In this study, the critical ricochet angle for a thin walled target will be estimated from numerical simulation. From the simulation data, the mechanism behind the ricochet phenomenon will be studied. The spherical fragment of diameter
