Abstract

Light gauge cold-formed steel members have been used extensively in low and mid- rise residential building construction. Since these cold-formed steel members are very thin, imperfections are of predominant concern and section’s resistance to compression, bending… etc. significantly affects with the type of imperfection. In the current code, North American Cold-formed Steel Specification for the Design Of Cold-formed Steel Structural Members (S100-2012), the design equation was very conservative and AISI S240: North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Structural Framing gave only one equation for any type of imperfection. The objective of the study is the investigation of cold-formed steel members as columns with end conditions considering imperfections to include various imperfections in numerical analysis and to find out the section’s resistance to compression. Finite element analysis is conducted for this purpose, being much more economical than expensive experimental testing. Detailed parametric studies are carried out to identify the factors (i.e. type of imperfection) affecting the compression capacity of cold-formed steel sections. The parametric results can be used to develop a design equation for calculating the compression capacity of cold-formed steel sections.
