Abstract

Granular piles are usually adopted as a ground modification technique for moderate structural loads, and are mostly suitable for sands, silty sands, non-plastic silts and clayey soils. Although the group of granular piles are effective in carrying higher loads, the load carrying capacity of the individual pile is reduced because of group effect. Generally, single isolated granular pile has higher resistance compared to a granular pile in a group subjected to similar loading conditions. This is because each pile in a group affects the resistance of soil which is surrounding the other piles in that group. The entire analysis in the present study is done using the finite element package PLAXIS 3D. The effects of spacing to diameter ratio and undrained shear strength of soil on interaction of granular piles arranged in triangular pattern is studied. Most of the studies were made on granular piles installed in homogeneous soils. But the knowledge of behavior of granular piles installed in stratified soil is of intense importance as most of the field conditions are such that, the granular piles encounters different soil layers i.e. heterogeneous soil layers. The performance of granular piles arranged in triangular pattern in two layered system is studied by focusing mainly on the load-settlement response and bulging pattern of granular piles (i) stiff clay overlying on soft clay soil (ii) soft clay overlying on stiff clay soil.
