Abstract
As it is
know
n
that there is no soil which is completely pure in nature. Soils are
always a mixture of one or more kind of soils like gravels, sands, silts and clays. In this thesis
also, there is discussion about mixtures of sand with fines in different percentages. Th
is study
mainly focuses over backfills where we see this kind of mixtures. In this study, we come to
know about the behavio
u
r of the sand and fines mixture with respect to the suction
parameters. As we are going to measure suction, it means that soil is no
t fully saturated; it is
in unsaturated condition having four phases of soil which are soil, water, air, and contractile
skin. Contractile skin is neglected during the experiments. Soil Water Characteristic Curve
(SWCC) is used as a tool to observe the beh
aviour of sand and fines mixture with respect to
the suction values. SWCC relates gravimetric water content or degree of saturation with the
suction of the soil. Suction may be total suction or matric suction or osmotic suction. With
this curve, the suctio
n parameters a, n and m are observed and it was seen that a parameter is
increasing as the percentage of fines is increasing in the sand and fines mixture. This implies
that as the fineness is increasing in the mixture, unsaturated condition occurs slowly.
We can
see that as the degree of saturation goes down, the suction increases to a high value. As we
have sand in major proportion, suction value is not very high as compared to fully clays
