Abstract

Base and solvent controlled synthesis of biologically active epoxy indanone and one pot α- hydroxy indanone (α-acyloin) from 2,3-diaryl dihydro indanone and 2,3-diaryl indenone, respectively was reported here. This reaction proceeds via a dianion intermediate in presence of base with oxygen bubbling leading to epoxy indanone and further hydrolysis leading to hydroxyl indanone. One-pot synthesis protocol was achieved directly from biaryl indenone followed by reduction, epimerization and oxygen trapping. This serendipitous formation of epoxy indanone from reduced diaryl dihydro indanone is eccentric and lucid and occurs within a short span of time
