Abstract

Municipal solid waste mate rial (MSW) is one of the major contributor to the waste generated every year. According to World Bank group, globally MSW of 1.3 billion tonnes is produced every year and is expected reach a whopping 2.2 billion tonnes by 2025. In this study, an attempt ha s been made to determine the suitable interface of geosynthetic liner and cover in designing the landfill for interface shear strength perspective. Engineering properties like shear strength parameters, interface shear strength parameters for different geo s ynthetic interfaces, other properties like moisture content and p article size distribution were determined. Assistive tests like pluviation test for sandy soil compaction, tensile test for Geomembrane were conducted. The interface frictional properties w ere determined at three load levels of 30 kPa, 60 kPa, and 90 kPa. Interface parameters are reported for two types of shear box filling including soil and wooden planks. Three different types of geosynthetics including Geomembrane, Geotextile and Geogrid w ere used. The interface friction results are presented for those interfaces that may exist within a landfill cover or in liner system. The large scale direct shear tests are carried out in all these experimental series. In this study, comparison of inter face friction properties with different interfaces is discussed .
