Abstract
Acoustical imaging based on the ultrasonic pulse - e cho method is widely applied to medical diagnosis, echo sounder, sonar systems, marine seismic systems, in oil industries. It’s an emerging imaging technique that has been successfully demonstrated for non - invasive, non - cont act and in - vivo imaging of bio - logical specimen. Ultrasound imaging uses high frequency sound waves to image structures with in the body. The most common type of ultrasound imaging is the pulse - echo amplitude imaging. Here a short ultrasound pulse is trans mitted and the amplitude of the echo is recorded, based on the direction of the beam and the time it takes for the echo to return to the transducer, the location of the source of each different part of echo is determined. This echo depends on the character istics of the propagation medium i.e . the body tissue, and thus contains information about these characteristics. In this thesis, simulation for synthetic pulse - echo based ultrasound imaging of biological tissues is presented. This thesis also explores ba sic ultrasound physics and mathematics involved in propagation of ultrasound or pressure waves through a medium in terms of impulse response. In this thesis, the simulation of propagation medium is done by using the time of flight data to get reflected/sc attered signal from two scatters. The method assumes linear wave propagation and applies linear system theory, modelling the interaction between the ultrasound wave and the propagation medium as an impulse response. The time of flight or echo time matrices are created using MATLAB for a single pulse array transmitter/rec eiver.
