Abstract

The effect of laser welding of a cobalt based super alloy on the microstructure evolution and strength of the alloy was investigated. For this purpose, the alloy was welded by bead - on - plate type welding technique with CO 2 laser with a rgon as shielding gas and welding parameters are 3.5kw power, argon flow rate of 20lt/m i n, welding speed of 3m/m i n and 0.18mm beam diameter. Microstructural study revealed cuboidal morphology of the gamma prime precipitate in the base metal zone as well as fusion zone. There was a decrease in the hardness of the weld metal in comparison to the base metal. Hardness decreased from the base metal zone to the partially melted zone to the fusion zone due to decrease in precipitate size which act as a primary str engthening phase in this alloy.
