Abstract
The onset of convection in a horizontal fluid-saturated porous layer which is heated or salted from below is investigated in the present thesis. The instability of convection is studied via linear and nonlinear stability analyses. The problems presented in this thesis can be broadly divided into two parts. The first part deals with the onset of pure thermal convection and second part of the thesis deals with the onset of double diffusive (thermosolutal) convection in horizontal porous layers. The thermal convection models which are considered in Chapters 2, 3 and 4 are: convection of Hadley-Prats flow with variable gravity field and vertical throughflow effect; Darcy-Brinkman convection with uniform internal heat source and vertical throughflow; and convection in a horizontal heterogeneous porous layer, respectively. The double diffusive convection models in Chapters 5 and 6 are: convection with vertical throughflow and concentration based internal heat source; and double diffusive convection with Soret effect, respectively.
