Abstract
The rise of opportunistic and participatory sensing paradigm is due to popularity of ubiquitous mobile phone usage. Now a days, mobile phones are coming with different types of scalar and multimedia sensors, embedded externally or inbuilt, which includes temperature, pressure, humidity, camera, microphones, gyroscope, accelerometer, digital compass and GPS (Global Positioning System). Mobile phones also have different types of communication technologies like cellular (2G/3G/4G) and short range communications like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and RFID (Radio-frequency identification). Thus mobile phones with sophisticated sensing, computing and communication capabilities are becoming a good choice for local and global sensing applications. Mobile phone sensing networks deal with mobile phone sensor data collection, computation and communication. Applications in this new sensing paradigm includes environment monitoring, urban monitoring, traffic monitoring, health care monitoring, air pollution monitoring, intelligent transportation, disaster management, mass education and social networking. Existing literature survey discusses leading mobile phone sensing applications and new sensing trends.
