Abstract
Gelcasting is a versatile ceramic processing method to realize any complicated shape and size of ceramics, which are generally difficult to achieve through traditional processing methods. Typically, gelcasting process is a combination of polymer driven and colloidal ceramic processing method. It is widely used to fabricate complicated and bigger ceramic parts by using organic binders which will be removed by burning. In the present study, a new concept of using inorganic binders is introduced to fabricate ceramic products. Initially it has been proved with fused silica ceramics where improved physical and mechanical properties of the prepared ceramics was achieved. This was realized when the inorganic binder concept is compared with the existing organic binder systems in terms of mechanical properties and reliability of the end product. Finally the inorganic binder system concept is extended to alumina ceramics and successfully standardized the process parameters to achieve better mechanical properties even at lower sintering temperature.
