Abstract
Scintillators are wavelength shifters and attract researchers because of its wide range of applications in the high energy physics, medicine field, security system etc., and the demand for new scintillators with variety of applications increases day by day. Basic electronic structure and optical properties are key requirements to understand the mechanism of scintillators. In the present thesis, first principle calculations have been performed to compute the electronic structure and optical properties of three different class of scintillating host materials. We have used full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method and plane wave pseudopotential methods as implemented in WIEN2k, CASTEP codes respectively. We are mainly interested in three different class of compounds, such as halides, oxides, oxyhalides compounds, and in each class of compound our focus is in different direction.
