Abstract

Torsional loadings can significantly affect the flow of internal forces and deformation capacity of RC columns. This, if not considered in design, can influence the performance of vital components of bridges and consequently impact the daily operation of the transportation system. Moreover, presence of torsional loading increases the possibility of brittle shear dominated failure which may result in fatal catastrophe. However, a review of previously published studies indicates that the torsional behaviour of reinforced concrete members has not been studied in as much depth as the behaviour under flexure and shear.
