Abstract
The conventional large power network diagram creation and editing is time-consuming and requires considerable effort. A method for automatic generation of the power network layout given the connectivity and initial co-ordinates of buses is described in this paper. In this method, force directed graph layout algorithm is used, which improves the layout by re-organizing the buses to eliminate crossings to achieve an aesthetically pleasing representation. Certain practical aspects for applying this algorithm for large power system are also introduced in this paper. The algorithm has been implemented in python programming language and the scalable vector graphics (SVG) standard is used to display the results. An illustrative 4 bus system has been explained in detail. The algorithm is further applied to creation of layout for a 42 bus Indian Western Region grid. The results obtained contains less number of crossings and the visualization of graph was improved. Possible directions of future work in this area are listed.
