Abstract
Due to rapid growth in the population it was estimated that our country might face water scarcity problem in coming years. In order to come out of this problem the best option is to treat the grey water and use it for irrigation, gardening, flushing and other purposes. Laundry waste water comprises the major part of grey water. The performance of aerobic and anaerobic treatment process was evaluated for both real laundry waste water, detergents and dishwashers. It was observed that the laundry waste water, detergents and dishwashers showed 95-98% of degradation in acclimatized conditions, but inhibited the ethanol enriched culture. The dishwashers showed more toxicity than the detergents under aerobic conditions. Under anaerobic conditions the methanogens are found to be more sensitive to the laundry waste water.
