Abstract

An occlusion of the middle cerebral artery leads to focal cerebral ischemia. At the different stages of cerebral ischemia, six monopolar electrodes were placed on the scalp of eight male Charles Foster rats to record EEGs from the frontoparietal, occipital and temporal lobes of the brain. The study encapsulates two objectives: (1) an estimation of chaos from the variation of approximate entropy, correlation dimension and Lyapunov exponent in individual lobes; and (2) the visualization of wavelet coherence from magnitude-squared coherence coefficients in between frontoparietal–occipital, frontoparietal–temporal and occipital-temporal lobes at pre (0–30 Hz), post (4–14 Hz) and during (1–4 Hz) focal cerebral ischemia. Experimental results reveal a different dimension of the brain as it generates low states of disorder and functional correlations in the peak hours of cerebral hypoxia and regains to a higher state after injection of piroxicam that acts as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Specific to the brain lobes, the chaotic nature of the occipital lobe is different from the other two lobes and shows a higher amount of chaos at the peak ischemic hours. © 2022, The Institution of Engineers (India).
