Abstract
The chapter gives insight into the significance of encapsulation in agriculture. The process of encapsulation is well established in food, pharma, and other industries but lacks implication in commercial agriculture products. The article discusses the potential material used as encapsulators and the process by which the encapsulation is carried out. It also gives an overview of conducted studies with biobased material, including starch, cellulose, chitosan, and lignin, and synthetic polymers and hydrogels used for controlled release of active molecules. Interesting studies on the encapsulation of herbicide, insecticide, and pesticide have been discussed. Encapsulation of microorganisms assisting the plant growth and related studies provide a healthy prospect for increasing crop yield and plantation in arid regions. Further, the chapter briefs the challenges faced and its impact on the surroundings. Thus the implication of encapsulation technology has been a boon to the agricultural processes. © 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
