Abstract

Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) with LC filter has many applications such as uninterrupted power supplies, distributed generation, and micro-grids. In general, control algorithm of VSI is a sequential structure of pulse width modulation (PWM) and a cascade PI controller with inner current loop and outer voltage loop. It is usual that the outer control loops run at less bandwidth than the inner control loops which causes a poor dynamic performance of load voltage. So recently, sample based algorithms such as Model Predictive Control (MPC) techniques have been investigated in the literature which provide fast dynamic action and a simple solution to the control problems with multiple constrains and multiple objectives. Basically, variable switching frequency generation of MPC causes poor THD, increased switching losses, filter design complications. Especially, for a VSI with AC side LC filter, the variable switching frequency may cause resonances. To deal with the above issues, fixed frequency MPCs have been investigated in the literature. When a fixed frequency MPC is applied to a VSI with LC filter, weight factor tuning is another problem because it requires more calculations. To avoid the problem of weight factors tuning, weight factors have been eliminated using a sequential predictive control. So a Sequential MPC cascaded with modulation operation has been proposed to VSI with LC filter. Simulation results are presented for basic MPC, MPC with weight factor and the proposed method using MATLAB ®/Simulink. Computational requirements, steady state performance and transient performance, and the harmonic performance have been presented and compared to exhibit the improvements. © 2021 IEEE.
