148 negotiations with his publisher (161–2). But in stressing the contingent and many-sided nature of Byzantine history, Bury set little store by the Teutonic enthusiasms of his predecessors. Steinberg suggests that the new ethos of historical science, together with the growth of Anglo-German strategic rivalry, had made Teutonism a less compelling source of historical explanations, at least to British scholars, by the beginning of the twentieth century. An unapologetic history of ideas, Race, Nation, History scrutinizes the arguments and internal consistency of texts with forensic acuity. One consequence of this focus is that the book sometimes pays relatively less attention to the institutional, political, and religious backgrounds of the authors under discussion.
