Abstract
The regulated power point tracking (RPPT) technique is used to alleviate the operational issues that may arise due to the excessive power production by a photovoltaic (PV) array. The RPPT mechanism regulates the power output of a PV array whenever it is necessary. While regulating the PV array power output below the maximum power point (MPP), there would be two possible operating points around a particular hill of the power-voltage (P - V) curve. One possible operating point lies in the constant current region, whereas the other one lies in the constant voltage region of the P - V curve. The main objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive comparative performance analysis of the PV system between the RPPT operations in those two operating regions. The different transient phenomena in the power tracking dynamics have been explored. The performance indicators, such as the tracking time, % tracking error, and % efficiency, have been analyzed and compared. The work carried out in this paper is helpful in correctly selecting the operating region for the RPPT control. The performance investigation has been carried out with the help of the MATLAB simulation studies, and results related to different operating conditions are presented. © 2021 IEEE.
